MEET YOUR TEACHER
Hey, I'm Nana!
I'm an illustrator and sculptor based between NYC and Massachusetts. I grew up in a small New England town by the sea, surrounded by the kind of natural world that continues to inspire my work today.
Over the years, I've had the chance to create art for books, toys, games, museums, augmented reality, and more, while also developing my own collection of personal artwork, now available through major retailers.
My work has always been about exploring characters, creatures, and the little details that make them feel alive. In The Joy of Animals, I'm excited to share the ways I approach drawing animals, from observing real references to experimenting with color, shape, expression, and imagination.
AS SEEN IN
How to Become a Magic: The Gathering Artist
I am a featured Woman Innovator for Magic: The Gathering, and had the opportunity to explain my creative journey, how I broke into the industry, what inspires my work, and the advice I have for aspiring artists looking to build a career in games.
What you’ll unlock through the course:
A better understanding of animal anatomy
Learn to see animals as a collection of simple shapes, proportions, and structures, making them easier to draw from different references and angles.
The confidence to make animals feel alive
Explore expressions, eyes, ears, noses, fur, poses, and other details that give each animal its own character and personality.
The freedom to create from imagination
Take everything you’ve learned beyond references and use it to combine shapes, species, colors, and ideas into creatures of your own.

Modules 3 & 4: Heads & Bodies
Learn how to break animals down into simple shapes and understand the similarities between different animals and humans. Explore heads, facial features, expressions, fur, body proportions, poses, tails, wings, patterns, and the details that make each animal unique.
Modules 5 & 6: Helpful Things & Plants
Discover useful tips, tricks, and techniques to make your artwork easier and more enjoyable. Then explore plants through both traditional and digital art, learning how to incorporate natural shapes, leaves, and other botanical details into your illustrations.
Modules 7 & 8: Painting Owls & Cats
Put your skills into practice with two animal painting projects! Learn how to draw and paint an owl, starting with a traditional sketch and exploring color and details. Then follow a British Shorthair cat illustration from the first sketch to the finished digital painting.
